FLUTTERBYS

Scope

Charles Allen Haynes and Jay Davis

This site is a record of our encounters with the wild world. The Observations section, sporadic though the postings may be, chronicles these encounters wherever we go.

For example a recent discovery of a “grappe” of snails in a local park drew Charlie’s attention and when he reached out to the academic world for identification of these tiny animals he found a couple of retired professors very much into the world of mollusks. These little ones are not supposed to be here in Atlanta. So, add them to the list… the snails not the professors.

And then, last week someone said they had seen an American White Pelican on a lake nearby and that turned out to be true. Yeah, add birds to the list… probably plants as well. Here we go!

So that’s the scope… life on the planet.

There are many wonderful collections of photographs of all wildlife in books of all sizes and prices and availability. The lichen photographs made by Sylvia Sharnoff and her husband Steven are remarkable. Losing her to this scientific/photographic world was a great loss (1998). We can’t begin to cover any living group to the degree the “specialists” have but it’ll be fun and we get to be with Franca and other friends in the wild.

NOTE: We are going to include photographs of species we haven’t identified. As time permits we will add the genus species names, location, etc.

All the photographs were taken by Charles Allen Haynes, or in the case of “observations,” the article author (Jay or Charlie), unless attributed otherwise. All supportive material is original unless attributed otherwise.
