Today Franca and I drove over to Arabia Mountain, the Davidson side, to look for Trout Lilies. Jay had given me coordinates to a location where he had seen them before. The location is a stream bank and its attendant flood plain in the south end of the Davidson part of the Arabia Mountain - Davidson Nature Preserve.

I stopped near the stream, got out of the car and there was a blooming Trout Lily about 6 feet away. Pretty good location tip I think. We wandered the area and realized there were hundreds of Trout Liles rising above the leaf litter, not very many blooming but enough to photograph. At first I thought as a group they had not bloomed yet but now I think we got in on the late bloomers. Maybe they just have a range of season in which they bloom. In any case, I photographed Trout Lilies. (Erythronium americanum)

We walked around that area and I photographed a few other species. I had a little trouble confirming the Wood Anemone. Most of the photographs I found seemed to show a different flower morphology; the number of petals on the flower and shape of the petals, even leaf shape. Finally I found a “scientific” source online and recognized the plant in that illustration. Saw some expected wildflowers; Common Blue Violet… not blue, Sweet White Violet … white, various lichens and ferns.

I’d be happy to reveal the location of the lilies if you’ll use the contact form and tell me about your interest.
